Mid summer, the temperature in Colorado Springs could be 90 degrees fahrenheit, but the temperature at the top of Pikes Peak is only 50. The temperature inside the Cave of the Winds is a steady 54 degrees year around. Once the sun goes behind the mountain, temperatures drop quickly. Trust us.

Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region has some of the most beautifully mild weather year around. (We’ve celebrated many Christmases with the sliding glass door open!) The temperature tends to fluctuate between 28 and 61 degrees fahrenheit, with very little snow till Spring.
The day of your hike, start early-early, like before the sun comes up. You want to be off the mountain by the afternoon. A general rule of thumb for high-altitude climbing in Colorado is to be headed down the mountain before noon, due to afternoon showers and storms, even in the summer.

There are three classic ways to reach Pikes Peak’s summit: The Manitou & Pike’s Peak Cog Railway, a favorite among armchair (or railcar) explorers; the Pikes Peak Highway, a 19-mile paved road that snakes up the mountain, and Barr Trail, a 12.7-mile uphill route used by runners, hikers, and skilled mountain bikers.

Very very steep cliffs, if you don’t like the incline when you first go up a roller coaster you won’t like the cog. It is a very slow – extremely steep – overlooking cliffs… Kind of a cool experience lots of historical facts on the way up. Be prepared to be cold at the top.
